# Data Program Management

A data program needs roles and definitions that keep projects from drifting. The page starts with a definition of data program management, then moves to what a program manager does in general, and ends with the data program manager as a job.

Program management for data is a specialization of the general project and program practice. The same notes are in [Project & Program Management](/ai-product/project-and-program-management.md) and [Project Management](/ai-product/management.md#project-management).

The definition comes first. [What is a data program management? and a manager.](https://www.ddmcd.com/dpm-intro) by Dennis D McDonald. is his introduction to data program management (DPM), and <http://www.ddmcd.com/dpm> is his index of links to and excerpts from the site's articles on the topic.

A data program manager is first a program manager. <https://rebelsguidetopm.com/what-is-a-program-manager/#What_is_a_program> is a program manager explaining what a program is and what the role does, with the essential skills for anyone considering the career change; <https://rebelsguidetopm.com/what-is-a-program-manager/> is the same article from the top.

Then the data part. <https://www.velvetjobs.com/job-descriptions/data-program-manager> is a data program manager job description, which includes devOps support such as monitoring the health of data pipelines and escalating performance issues. <https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-become-data-program-manager-krishna-mohan-kaluri/> asks how to be a good data program manager and answers with a deep awareness of the data management life cycle, exceptional project management skills, and a solid grasp of benefits management. The list of [program manager responsibilities](https://www.projectmanager.com/training/program-manager-responsibilities) is Jennifer Bridges, PMP, with a full job description of the role.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://www.mlcompendium.com/data/engineering-intro/data-program-management.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
