Design Of Experiments

A test that changes one thing at a time burns runs; design of experiments plans the tests so you learn from fewer of them. The reading below goes from why and how to experiment, through introductions, to worked Python, R, and Matlab examples. The same notes are in Factorial Design.

The two (good) starting points frame the problem before any tooling. (good) The 7 steps of DoE is Chris Kuo's Design of Experiments for Your Change Management, written for data science professionals who have faced the challenges it lists. (good) Experimental Design for Data Science is the same question asked as experimental design in data science. Vidhya on DOE, has a good explanation on why and how we can experiment with less variables is the Guest Blog beginner's guide, with a case study on banner advertisement, that treats DoE as a common analytical technique to design the right testing framework.

With the why in place, the introductions name the idea itself. An intro to DOE used to open this run; that address no longer opens and is kept at the end of the page. 2. is Nicolus Rotich's A Design of Experiments, which starts from why we say "a design of experiments" the way we say "a school of fish", even though we are used to "a set of experiments".

The rest turns the plan into code. Design of experiments overview of types, with PyDoe is Tirthajyoti Sarkar creating the experimental design with a simple Python command; the update notes that the code is now the standard library doepy, installed with pip install doepy and used to generate design tables. Its source, with multiple examples, is the Git repo tirthajyoti/Design-of-experiment-Python, a design-of-experiment (DOE) generator for science, engineering, and statistics. Design of Experiments (DOE) with python is Andrea Castiglioni's introduction through a simple case study with and without interactions. Its follow-up, Response Optimization with Design of Experiments and python, moves from mean effects and interactions in a 2-level DOE to looking for the maximum response of the system. Outside Python, Factorial Design using Matlab is the full factorial experiment, two or more factors with discrete values and every combination of them, run in MATLAB. DOE with R is Design of Experiments with R, opening on an image by Hans Reniers.
